Before you even begin to advertise a subscription website you have a very important factor to consider: what’s in it for them? “What’s in it for me” is the first thing that people will ask themselves when they see your membership site advertised online. What do they gain by becoming members – that is fundamentally what they will be thinking. That is what you have to answer, and answer well if you are to persuade them to part with their cash each month, every month.

How to Answer the Question

How you answer that question will be fundamental to your success in persuading visitors to join your subscription web site. If people do not believe that they will benefit from joining your site, then they won’t join. What they want from the site will rise commensurate with your monthly membership fee, so if you want to be able to charge a reasonable fee, then be prepared to offer them more in the form of benefits.

There are many ways in which a member site can benefit those that join them. Here are just a few:

a) Educate them in the topic of the niche

b) Help them make money

c) Help them save money

d) Save them time

e) Make things easier for them

By discussing each of these in turn you may be able to make a decision on the content you should provide on your membership site. These must be genuine benefits that your members truly believe will help them, and offer them value for the fee they pay you for access to the site.

Not just that, but you must be able to persuade them of that on your sales page, or on the member site itself, or they will likely make the decision to give it a miss. If you have an eBook on the topic that you can give away free don’t give it all away at once. Split it into sections – natural chapters might be good. Then offer one section or chapter each month. Once the first book is finished, you could start on a second. Keep in mind that ‘free’ is used in the context of them paying their monthly subscription. You could use part of that to purchase the rights to certain eBooks that you can offer in parts each month.

In telling them what’s in it for them, you could include the educational aspects of your site, informing them of new information available on the niche every month. If you are knowledgeable yourself and can write your own content, then you could also write a fresh article for each month covering a specific aspect of the niche each time.

Help Them Make Money

The money angle could come from advice on how to create and sell their own products. You could teach them how to set up their own websites and how to market them for example. You could even show your members how to design membership sites of their own to make money – and then sell them the member site software package you are using from your affiliate link!

When it comes down to it, the vast majority of your members will have joined because they believed being a member would enable them learn how to make more money, or how to make it easier or more quickly. A few may just want information, but unless the niche is an altruistic one it generally comes down to money in the long run.

People will pay money to save time, particularly if they also have a day job and can spend only limited time running their online business.

These are the main reasons for people joining a member site, and paying to do so. If you can offer any of these benefits to members, then play on them and use them in your advertising. The benefits your membership site offers are what will sell that site to potential members, but having done so, make sure that you provide them. I’ve talked about a type of fantasy world above which I told you was real, but it did require the coordination of many other tools such as a listserver (newsletter sending program) and prospect management system. These are used to get the people to visit your “open house”.

How do you make money with an “open house” meeting?

As people visit your site and find it possible to actually see you visually, you get elevated a few notches on the totem pole of true business people. Visitors are looking for attention, and when that attention is directed at them visually you become a real person, ready to help. You should always lead with, “Thank you for visiting my website, how may I help YOU?”. Do you see this effectiveness in your mind? You should because it will increase your sales by 50% even if you are not very good at presenting the products and services that your website has to offer.

Remember, guests that drop by your site are gold, they are there to not only to satisfy their curiosity but to purchase something either at that time or in the near future. Sending out a video postcard or video email is a good way to shake hands and keep that new relationship fresh.

How you follow-up with prospects or guests is critical to your profitability and can be done using video and audio in very cheap and simple ways. For example, there is a company called Skype. This is not video but after a meeting sometimes it’s best to get back to basics as you move to the close. I find that with a call rate that cheap you can’t go wrong. The kicker here is that you can give them your website address again anytime they would like to switch to video and either continue the conversation (they might have their phone away from the computer and prefer to pull up their webcamera), or visually see the item or service points on a web page you are talking about. Using audio with video in conjunction can make you a ton of money and keep you in touch with your buyers and build that relationship. One important note here – too many early Internet entrepreneurs tried hard to “depersonalize” the Internet. They insisted that money could be made by posting order forms, spamming email addresses and simply waiting for the orders to arrive. With video and audio now prominently everywhere on the Internet the “NEW” Netizen is more savvy and insists on personal customer service to confirm legitimacy.

How can you utilize a video recording to make your site more profitable?

It goes without saying that not a day goes by without someone emailing and asking for product information. It’s nice to be able to send them an email back with the usual product title, description and order form link. Works, but only 1 percent of the time. Sure you can chat and video with them but say you simply don’t have time? Say you are busy doing a meeting or are on your Skype phone closing a deal? Tie this in with your free product presentation recordings and you begin to see the picture.

Video communication will rule the Internet

That’s absolutely the truth about the future! Remember those dreams of video telephones, video cell phones? Why didn’t they happen? Well they are in the works but now vendors like yourself are realizing that a person at a computer has the bandwidth, visual monitor full of beautiful colors and most importantly, a credit card handy. The “future” customer is looking for you to communicate with them at NO charge to them! This is the reason for video online rather than via phone, cheap and easier to get them to spend!

With that being said, I have some research to share with you. I never tell people this and don’t as a rule teach this in any of my workshops. I don’t because it’s something that cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars to learn. Ready…?

This does not necessarily mean that page rank lacks value but rather that you must remember that there are many other factors that affect how much authority a site has. If this is what drives the SEO method that you use then you may be disappointed.

2. Another myth that remains in circulation is if one link is good then having thousands must be fantastic. Rather than concentrating on how many links your website has, there are two things that you should be doing if you want your site to do well in the SERP’s.

To begin with you must establish the number of links your competition has. Generally you should try to create about five percent more links that have equal or higher quality. There are a number of cases where websites that have only one hundred links will outrank websites that have link in the millions and this happens because those sites with the one hundred links are all high quality. In order to succeed you need to have a strategy that combines quantity and quality.

3. Myth number 3 talks about just linking your homepage and the big problem with this myth is that it does hold a kernel of truth. Generally a good rule to follow is that your homepage should have more back-links than any of the other pages on your website. Logically this makes perfect sense because your homepage will automatically share its power throughout the rest of your site. What creates the myth in the first place is when people begin building back-links to their website and ignore the inner pages completely. Keep in mind that so long as you make it a habit to effectively inter-link your inner pages, then every link to every page will increase the strength of your complete website and if you want your link building to look natural then every page should get at least a few back-links so that is looks as it is occurring naturally.

You should be able to understand from this that your main focus must be on following the SEO method that you have decided is best for you in order to succeed with your online income opportunities business and take less notice of the myths that have proven to be unfounded.

Marketing Metrics. It’s a scary sounding term, but it’s not as complicated or time-consuming as many small business owners think. If you want to get more clients and make more sales, it’s essential to be able to assess which aspects of your marketing, sales, and products/services funnels are working and which aspects aren’t.

Ultimately you need to be able to (easily) understand why clients are buying and why they are not. To get you started here are six things you can do to help create easy to track marketing metrics that will help you get more clients and close more sales.

Evaluate: Look at your sales process and evaluate whether there is a specific spot in the process where you consistently lose potential customers and clients. If there is such a spot, try to evaluate exactly how this loss happens, and use this information to improve your sales process.

For example, I have a client who is a coach with a nice sized list. She was having a really hard time filling her coaching programs and turned to me for help. When we evaluated her marketing and sales process, we discovered EXACTLY where in the process clients stopped taking the next step. Once we knew this, we were able to address the problem. Now she has clients “Coming out of the woodwork”.

Listen for feedback. If there is something that many of your clients say they want, make sure you provide it for them.

For example, a client of mine is a web designer who only used to create custom wordpress themes. She was receiving daily inquiries from people who LOVED her work, but couldn’t afford her prices. So, she created a few designs that allowed from minimal customization (such as a banner on top) and created a less expensive and more turnkey product line. The result, more sales by listening to feedback.

Ask clients what they want. Whenever you get the chance, ask your clients what you can do to better serve them. Then, create a “do better” file and try to identify themes.

This is a question I always ask my clients. Early in my coaching business, my clients let me know I could “do better” by using some sort of software to make collaboration (during the session) easier. So I have been using GoToMeeting with my clients for years. The result is that my clients are more plugged in during our coaching sessions because we are able to share computer screens and information.

Take complaints seriously. Whenever a client makes a complaint, don’t just dismiss them. Even if it hurts your pride, accept that there is probably something valid to their complaint, and consider how you can prevent such issues in the future.

This is such a tough one for everyone, including me. If one person complains, usually another 10 people are thinking it. Most people don’t take the time to complain, they just take their business somewhere else. So it’s critical to be responsive to complaints.

Try split testing: Create with two different marketing messages, and send one message out to half your list and the other message out to the other half of your list. Which one does better? Why did it work so much better than the other one?

Knowing what your clients respond to will help you create more compelling marketing messages, which result in more clients.

Ask how clients heard about you: Keep track of where your clients and sales are coming from. This will help guide you in your future marketing efforts.

For instance, if you are doing social marketing and spending one hour a week on Facebook and 10 minutes a week on Twitter. By tracking how clients heard about you and discovering that most of the sales you’re making are from Twitter, you can then increase the time you spend on Twitter which will increase your sales.
